Benefits of Membership and How to Join

Membership is open to any individual or organization interested in promoting the objectives of the Society and upon payment of $25.00 dues per year. Annual memberships (and renewals) start on the first day of the month following receipt of dues. Annual memberships expire 12 months later on the last day of the month. Renewals should be sent early in the last month of membership to assure that no lapse of membership occurs. Our board and committee members who deal with incoming new and renewal memberships need time to process them. For the annual dues, each organizational member . . .
  • receives four issues of the MGS quarterly, (Deep South Genealogical Quarterly) which has been published since 1963 and is regarded as one of the top genealogical publications in the country.
  • receives our monthly newsletter.
For the annual dues, each individual member . . .
  • receives four issues of the MGS quarterly. (see note below)
  • receives our monthly newsletter. (see note below)
  • may submit queries for publication in the DSGQ according to the guidelines established by the editor.
  • may participate in any of the active Sharing Information Groups (SIGs).
  • may attend our monthly Genealogy "How To..." Workshops conducted by experienced genealogists, at 12:00 Noon, before our regular membership meeting.
  • may utilize the computer equipment and CD-ROMs in our library for research and scanning projects.
  • may have the surnames they are actively researching placed into the MGS web site's internet surname search engine to make it easier for Internet genealogists to make a connection.
  • may have the web address of their personal genealogical web site placed in the MGS web site's online directory of member web sites.
  • may attend our monthly meeting and program at no charge.
  • receives a discount on charges for seminars and special classes and/or workshops that the Society sponsors.
  • obtains the opportunity to network and socialize with some of the most knowledgeable, experienced and FRIENDLY genealogists in the area.
We have recently initiated Junior Memberships aimed at the younger family researcher. The cost for this membership is $10.00 dues per year. Junior members are provided the same privileges as the full membership, except they do NOT receive the quarterlies.

A note about mailed publications:
The MGS Newsletter and the DSGQ are mailed within the United States at bulk rate for a non-profit organization. Members outside the U.S. must contribute additional postage to receive these publications by mail. Online members can, however, view the most recent issues of the MGS Newsletter on this web site. Publications that are returned by the Postal Service due to members moving and not updating their address with the Society are not re-mailed. (The Society incurs first class postage for every returned publication) Therefore, you should be sure to keep your membership data current at all times. Don't forget you can e-mail us! For the same price as an individual membership, a joint membership is available, which includes up to 2 members of the same family at the same address. Both family members enjoy the benefits of individual membership, but only one copy of the monthly newsletter or the DSGQ is mailed to that address each time they are sent out.

For individuals over 60, a special life membership is available for a one-time cost of $400.00.
